Canton Raptor Care is committed to assisting birds of prey that have been injured and require medical care before being released into the wild.

Many of the birds admitted are injured due to human activity. These days the loss of habitat, construction, highways and roads, tree cutting, electrocution and organophosphate poisoning make survival for birds of prey even more of a challenge. It is due to these increasing threats to raptors that Canton Raptor Care was established. Raptors preserve the balance of the eco system in many ways. They help cull prey animal populations and keep those species genetically strong by preying on the weak, sick, or injured. Eating small reptile species, insects, rodents and fish helps keep the natural world healthy. CRC does its part in releasing only viable birds that are ready to take on the challenges life in the wild presents.

When a patient is admitted information about where, how and when the animal was injured is recorded. Most birds are released where they were originally found and every attempt is made to re-nest babies with parents as soon as possible.

Birds are given a physical examination and an appropriate treatment plan is created. When necessary, birds are transported to a veterinary wildlife clinic in MA for diagnostic testing and radiographs.

After the birds begin to heal they are placed in intermediate housing. Once the bird is ready for increased movement and physical therapy they are then placed in larger cages to determine flight capability and eventually will go into species specific flight cages for reconditioning and mouse school.

Once the bird has demonstrated its ability to fly well and hunt it is ready for release. Birds are released in a timely manner for migration. Birds that require longer care may be wintered over and released the following spring.

Canton Raptor Care maintains a facility for our education birds and flight conditioning caging for our patients. All cages are cleaned and maintained to prevent disease and to provide a decent and healthy environment for all birds living here.
